Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Charred Fragments, or Dark Shards, are the shattered pieces of Lorule's Triforce that have been scattered throughout Skyrim, Solstheim, and Apocrypha. They come in three varieties, with eight shards per variety. There are a total of 24 Tarnished Shards added by Relics of Hyrule.

The Lens of Truth is used to provide information on the locations of the Charred Fragments and their counterparts, the Tarnished Shards.

The varieties are not obvious as all Charred Fragments look alike. Only Charred Fragments of the same variety as another will stack in the player's inventory. The variety of a Charred Fragments is determined by which Lolian Triforce Piece it came from. As such, the eight shards of one variety can be combined into a Lolian Triforce Piece.

To reclaim a Lolian Triforce Piece, eight Charred Fragments of one variety must be brought to the Golden Goddess Statues in Kakariko Chapel or The Triforce Shrine.

Varieties Edit

The three varieties of the Charred Fragments correspond to the three virtues of the Lolian Triforce: Knowledge, Willpower, and Emotion.

Nayru's Statue collects Knowledge Fragments, Din's Statue collects Willpower Fragments, and Farore's Statue collects Emotion Fragments.

The container of a shard will have an adjective that hints to its variety.

Knowledge Drab

Lore Edit

Relics of Hyrule refers to Lorule's Triforce as the Lolian Triforce rather than the Lorulean Triforce to better connect with Hyrule's adjective "Hylian." Hyrule's Triforce is sometimes referred to as the Hylian Triforce in the mod's language.

The Charred Fragments were a result of the shattering of the Lolian Triforce at the end of the Last Great War of Hyrule. The lore books Zelda's Epitaph and Wisdom, Power, and Emotion have more information on this event.

Background and Inspiration Edit

The Charred Fragments were added to Relics of Hyrule in May 2015 with version 6.0. Unlike the Tarnished Shards, they were not planned until the details of the inclusion of the Triforce were finalized. The idea of including Lorule's Triforce emerged as JKalenad developed the lore for the Triforce.

The virtues of the Lolian Triforce pieces are not canon and were designed as complements to the Hylian virtues of Wisdom, Power, and Courage. The virtues were inspired by the Lake Trio of Sinnoh

The Charred Fragments are inspired by the pieces of the Triforce of Courage collected during the events of The Wind Waker. The number of fragments per Triforce Piece is the same as the number collected in The Wind Waker, and was chosen to reference the game, but also for reasons of numerology, as 23 = 8.

Many Charred Fragments are found in areas added by the Dawnguard and Dragonborn DLC. This was done intentionally to highlight the nature of Lolian Triforce as an otherworldly, dark Triforce.

For version 6.5, JKalenad moved the Charred Fragments in Vahlok's Tomb and the Abandoned Lodge outside their respective dungeons and into Minish Dungeons.
